How much is by my own will? Christians should often challenge themselves with those questions. Our will is sinful and God*s will is righteous. The opposition of our will to God*s will is our most important issue. Unbelievers try for 100% of their own will. A wise and mature Christian will seek 100% of God*s will. Though we don*t get all the way to that perfection in this life there are three simple things that it will be helpful to know and remember. 1. God*s will is best. God and His will are often mysterious to our limited minds. I have to keep it simple. I have to trust Him. I ask Him to show me His will. If His will is above my understanding I ask Him to do it anyway. Here are a few passages that I find helpful in the struggle between my will and His: Romans12:1-2: I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. 2 And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God. Ephesians 5:7-10: Be not ye therefore partakers with them. 8 For ye were sometimes darkness, but now are ye light in the Lord: walk as children of light: 9 (For the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness and righteousness and truth;) 10 Proving what is acceptable unto the Lord. Ephesians 5:17: Wherefore be ye not unwise, but understanding what the will of the Lord is. James 1:5: If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him. Proverbs 16:3: Commit thy works unto the LORD, and thy thoughts shall be established. Luke 22:42b: . . . nevertheless not my will, but thine, be done. Proverbs 3:5: Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. |
